Do I Need a Lawyer for My First Court Appearance?

Why Should I Have a Lawyer?

Having a skilled lawyer represent you is crucial. They can do the following:

  • Argue to lower the charge
  • Help you understand the process
  • Ensure your legal rights are protected while acting in your best interests.

What is a Designation of Counsel?

Once you hire a lawyer, you can sign a ‘Designation of Counsel’ that allows your lawyer to appear in court on behalf of you without you needing to appear. This then gets filed to the court, and for the consecutive appearances after that, you will not need to appear (barring trials and sentencing).

Depending on where your case goes, you may never have to show up again or you may have to appear for trial, and if it gets to that stage, sentencing.
